The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has begun preparing for the winter weather conditions on Iowa roadways.

Winter Operations Administrator for the Iowa DOT Craig Bargfrede says that they consider October 15th as the first day of winter and that equipment needs to be ready by that date if it is  required to be used.

“We have to have a certain amount of our equipment ready to go, should we need to go out and do any kind of a treatment. So over the last probably month or so, our garages have been working on equipment, getting plows and spreaders pulled out of cold storage, and they’ve been doing a lot of maintenance activities making sure that all of that equipment is functioning properly. ”
