Additional Troopers with the Iowa State Patrol will be on area highways this weekend as part of the department’s “Safe Saturdays” program. “Safe Saturdays” is in its second year and puts every sworn officer on the state’s roads for one of the four weekends in the month of June.

Last year the program netted a 120 percent increase in OWI arrests and increased speeding citations by 81 percent, while reducing fatalities in the month of June to 34 – noticeably below the average of 41. District two, which includes Marion County, is among the three districts that will have extra patrol this Saturday.
