Wintering bald eagles have started to move into Marion County and are busy building their nests for the winter. Marion County Conservation Naturalist Marla Mertz says that as temperatures drop the best place to view bald eagles locally will be near the Lake Red Rock Dam.

“Well, the colder it gets, the best place to go is below Red Rock Dam, because that water always stays open, they have a lot of trees around the corridor for them to conserve energy, and lots of food availability coming through. I’ve noticed more eagles below the dam at this point, but the colder it is, the more they move to sheltered areas such as below the dam, where they can conserve all the energy that they need when we have really cold nights and even cold days.”
