Thursdays in Pella took on a bit more cultural flavor this week as “Latino Festival” was the theme for the event. Central Park was full of activity as children swung at pinatas for candy, a youth ensemble performed authentic Mexican dances and a pan flutist played traditional music. The audience also got involved too, with chances to do the Macarena dance and brief lessons on Salsa dancing as well.

And speaking of salsa, the evening also included a salsa recipe contest, with Tom Linton of Leighton and Cheryl Fynaardt of Pella winning for their respective traditional and non-traditional salsa entries. Traditional salsa recipes were those with a tomato base, while non-traditional recipes included several variations on the popular chip condiment – with Fynaardt’s winning recipe featuring watermelon, among other ingredients.
