Friday’s loss in the opening round of the national tournament ended an incredible season for the Central College men’s basketball team, and also concluded the careers of five seniors who made up the entire starting line-up for much of the season.

A season that was, in many ways, the best in the history of the Central College men’s basketball program came to an unfortunate ending Friday night, as the Dutch fell to Illinois Wesleyan 86-81 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

After leading Central College to its first Iowa Conference men’s basketball championship in 15 seasons, senior Miguel Ley has been named the league’s Most Valuable Player and Mike Boschee has been tabbed as the coach of the year. Dutch senior Loren Liming was a first-team all-conference selection and senior Mark Holan was a second-team choice.

The Central College men’s basketball team earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament Saturday night, as the Dutch blitzed Buena Vista University 99-79 in the Iowa Conference Tournament Championship.

Despite missing all thirteen 3-point shots they attempted, the Central men’s basketball team was able to slow down one of the hottest teams in the Iowa Conference and claimed their first league title in 15 seasons, as they downed Loras last night 69-59.

After two consecutive wins that came down to the final seconds, the Central men’s basketball team let Head Coach Mike Boschee breathe easy at the end of Saturday’s Iowa Conference game in Decorah, as the Dutch dropped Luther 59-43.

The Central men’s basketball team followed Saturday’s overtime win over Wartburg with another exciting finish last night, as a last second three-pointer by Justin Madsen pushed the Dutch past Dubuque University 76-73.

Seniors Loren Liming and Miguel Ley each had big games, and it was just enough for the Central men’s basketball teams to get past Simpson, as the Dutch defeated the Storm 84-80 yesterday in Indianola.
