As the state continues to search for new sources of revenue, some leaders are wondering about the value of the Iowa Communications Network, or ICN. The ICN was established in 1989 as a way to bridge the distance between rural and urban areas, and better facilitate communication for schools, hospitals, colleges and the National Guard. Pella Schools Superintendent Mark Wittmer tells KNIA/KRLS News that while Pella doesn’t often use the network, it does still have value for smaller, more rural districts. Knoxville Superintendent Dr. Randy Flack says they don’t use the ICN for instruction, but do take advantage of it for meetings with the Area Education Agency, one of its intended functions.
