Central was able to fight through a blazing start by Luther and prevail in the Iowa Conference tournament championship game, 74 – 70. Luther got off to a 22 – 8 lead after hitting their first six shots from beyond the arc. Central kept chipping away and took advantage of the Norse’s missed opportunities under the basket on several occasions to climb closer and closer. With 4.4 seconds left in the first half and Central down by one, the tide of momentum shifted into the Dutch’s favor for good it seemed when Matt Greenfield launched a near-half court shot that banked it to give Central their first lead of the game which they would never relinquish. The game stayed close throughout in the second half before two final free throws made it a four-point game with five seconds left to ice it for the Dutch. Four starters had double-digit points, and two ended with a double-double; Kevin Kaerwer and Nile Eckermann each scored 19, Matt Greenfield had 17 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Colby Taylor netted ten points and grabbed 11 boards. Greenfield’s half-court heave three put him over the 1,000 point mark for his career. Central moves on to the NCAA Division III National Tournament, with their opponent to be announced on Monday during the “Selection Show.” KNIA/KRLS Sports will have the call for all of Central’s NCAA games during their dance in the tournament.
