Pella Christian Girls Soccer Team Proves it Can Play With Anyone

Posted: Saturday, April 14th, 2018 at 5:55 am

In 2017, the Pella Christian girls soccer team set a number of school records, both team and individually. In 2018, they’re hoping to cross another milestone off the list – the program’s first ever trip to the state tournament.

The Eagles showed they have the ability to play with the best teams in class 1A Thursday night when they beat #4 North Polk 1-0 on the road.

Coach Mike Buchheit knows that it’s only one game, and that there’s a long road ahead, but that victory is an indication of his team’s potential.

“In class 1A, there are some really good soccer teams. There are about 10 teams across the state in class 1A where you have to play your best game on that day to get to state. If we play well enough during the regular season, and we can stay ranked high enough, those ten teams maybe go someplace else and we don’t have to play them in substate. I’m not going to put a cap on this team.”

After avenging last year’s loss to North Polk, the Eagles will try to do the same in their next match on Tuesday night when they host Norwalk.

Bright Future for Pella Christian Girls Soccer Team

Posted: Friday, June 9th, 2017 at 5:56 am

As the girls’ state soccer tournament takes place this weekend in Des Moines, Pella Christian coach Mike Buchheit has visions of his team playing on that very pitch in the years to come.

The Eagles went 15-5 this spring, losing Monday in the regional final, just one match short of state.

The 15 wins are a school record, and come on the heels of back-to-back seasons in which Pella Christian won just five and six matches.

The Eagles will lose just one senior from this year’s club, albeit a very talented one in Cailey Terpstra.

Buchheit gushed about the three time all-Little Hawkeye Conference performer when asked about her during an interview for tomorrow’s Knoxville HyVee Radio Coaches Corner.

“I get to listen to coaches brag about their seniors all the time, and I’m going to do the same thing. It’s easy to do when it comes to Cailey Terpstra because of what she’s done for the program and for the team and the quality of that young lady and her faith commitment and her love for her teammates. You don’t have to guess where Cailey’s interests are, she’s very vested in this team.”

After leading the Eagles in scoring each of the last two years, Terpstra was the team’s second leading scorer this year with 13 goals and 11 assists.

Pella Christian will return a total of 12 players in 2018 that scored goals this spring, including Laura DeZwarte and Lindsay Breon, who scored 19 and 11, respectively.

You can hear the full interview with Pella Christian girls’ soccer coach Mike Buchheit tomorrow morning between ten and noon during the Knoxville HyVee Radio Coaches Corner on KNIA & KRLS.
