Pierce Hibma to Join Us on Tonight’s Marion County PM Sports Page

Posted: Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 at 5:59 am

One of the newest members of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame will join us tonight on the Marion County PM Sports Page on KNIA & KRLS.

Pierce Hibma, who graduated from Pella High School in 2003, was inducted into the basketball wing on championship night last Friday.

Now an Emergency Room Doctor in North Carolina, Hibma says that the things he learned as a member of the Little Dutch have carried forward to this day.

“If kids are listening, make sure you realize this is an opportunity to develop skills like work ethic, teamwork, accountability and leadership. If you can do that on a high school sports level, you can do that in any arena.”

Hibma is still Pella’s career leader in scoring, and has the most assists in school history as well. He says that he hopes that someone comes along soon to break those records.

You can hear the full interview with Hibma on tonight’s Marion County PM Sports Page, which starts at 6:00 on KNIA & KRLS.

Pierce Hibma to be Honored Tonight

Posted: Friday, March 9th, 2018 at 6:01 am

Fifteen years ago, Pella’s Pierce Hibma wrapped up one of the most decorated careers in Iowa high school basketball history. Tonight he takes his place among the greats when he is inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

After starring as a sophomore on a Little Dutch squad that finished third at the 2001 state tournament, Hibma led his club to back-to-back championships in 2002 and 2003.

Hibma was named to the all-tournament team all three years, becoming the first player in class 3A history to accomplish that feat. He’s still the only member of that club to this day. He was Pella’s all time leading scorer (1,301) and he holds the school’s career assist (310) record as well.

Hibma played his college basketball at Creighton, where he earned his degree from their College of Medicine. He’s currently a physician at Wake Forest Baptist Health in North Carolina.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s class of 2018 will be honored before tonight’s class 3A state championship game.

Pella Cruises Past Chariton in Boys’ 3A District Opener

Posted: Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 at 5:59 am

A 12-0 first quarter run helped the Pella High boys basketball team build a lead it would never relinquish in last night’s 68-51 win over Chariton in the class 3A district opener that was broadcast live on 92.1 KRLS.

After the Chargers hit a three-pointer to start the scoring, the Little Dutch ripped off the next dozen points and the game was never closer than seven the rest of the way.

Juniors Nick DeJong and Ryan Gustafson combined for 14 of Pella’s 19 points as they built a ten-point lead at the end of the first quarter, and they finished the game with 40 as a duo. Coach Derek Schulte says that was a big reason his club was victorious.

“Both those guys are key to our offense, and both played well tonight. Gus had it going from three and off the dribble, and Nick played like Nick. We got him the ball down low and he finished strong.”

Gustafson led all scorers with 23 points and DeJong added 17 and nine rebounds. Logan Shetterly chipped in 11 points and Lucas Warner battled for eight points and nine boards.

The Little Dutch are 11-11 on the season, and they’ll play Carlisle on Thursday night in the second round at Carlisle High School. The Wildcats beat Centerville last night, 83-75.
