Questions Abound on Special Teams for Pella High Football Team

Posted: Thursday, August 25th, 2016 at 5:58 am

As the first high school football Friday night approaches, Pella High coach Jay McKinstrey still doesn’t have the answers that he is looking for on special teams.

He says that they’ve spent quite a bit of time on special teams in the preseason, but will need real game action to start shaking things out.

“I just need some kids to step up there and try and get some kids out there to play. In order to get a few kids some time off who are on the field both offensively and defensively, we need kids to be able to do that. We’ll need some game time to see that. Special teams are so important, a lot of big plays are made there, and we’ve made a lot of hay in 19 years on special teams.”

The two most visible players on any special teams are the kicker and punter. Sophomore Gabe Thomas will do the kicking duties, while junior Kaden Miedema is the punter.

Pella opens the 2016 season tomorrow night at home against Oskaloosa.
