Tuesday will see the annual KNIA/KRLS Save a Life Radiothon, joining Knoxville Hospital and Clinics in raising awareness for breast cancer prevention.

The broadcast is meant to encourage women to get mammograms, in order to detect and treat breast cancer at an early stage. The event will coincide with the hospital’s annual “Girls Night Out” event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. involving a number of informational booths and area vendors.

Cindy Crozier from Knoxville Hospital tells KNIA/KRLS News this event allows those who have survived breast cancer to share their often difficult stories; and she notes that the patient isn’t the only one affected by the disease.

“If you’re married, it affects your husband; sometimes they don’t know how to deal with or talk to or what with their wives or their family,” Crozier says. “They’ve got children that they’re trying to help them while you’re going through this process, trying to help them through that. You’ve got, some people, their parents, their grandparents, aunts, uncles…it just reaches out and affects a lot of people.”

Both the broadcast and the event will take place in the hospital lobby; Dr. Bob Leonard hosts the broadcast on KNIA and KRLS, which runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Next week the broadcast will be from Pella Regional Health Center on KRLS, on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
