A mandate by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources that would force millions of dollars in sanitary sewer improvements over the next three years was discussed at Tuesday night’s Pella City Council meeting. A preliminary engineering report listed an estimated $3.4 million in projects for the first tier of the improvements. A final engineering report will be submitted to the Pella City Council on October 6th; when the DNR will also be present to explain the mandated improvements. The proposed improvements are predicted to increase sewer rates by 40-50 percent over the next three years. In other business, the Pella City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance exempting vehicle displays at dealerships from the city’s paving requirements, approved the 2009 Street Finance Report, and set October 31st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. as “Beggars Night.”
