The Knoxville City Council approved a contract for engineering services for the new equalization basin and smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system at their recent meeting. The purpose of the smoke testing, which begins today, is to identify locations where storm water enters the sanitary sewer system. The city will be placing notices on doors of homes and businesses in areas where the testing will take place prior to beginning the process. Public Works Director Jeff May says residents may notice the non-toxic, non-staining white smoke in down spouts, yards where there is a broken pipe or through floor drains. Those who find smoke in their homes or businesses are asked to call City Hall to notify staff who help them investigate and identify the source. Residents should also open up their doors and windows to air out the smoke.
