In the game that will likely determine the eventual winner of Class 1A District 6, the Pella Christian football team was stopped on fourth down with less than two minutes remaining as Sigourney-Keota held on for a 15-13 victory in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Cobras struck first on a Cole Clarahan three yard run late in the first quarter, and Pella Christian answered with an incredible 56-yard rumble through several broken tackles by Isaac Kacmarynski early in the second. Both teams failed to convert on their extra points, and Sigourney-Keota took a 9-6 lead with a 31-yard field goal as the first half expired.

After stopping the Eagles on the opening drive of the third quarter, the Cobras seemingly took control with a nearly six-and-a-half minute touchdown drive, capped by Clarahan’s three yard run, then they recovered a Pella Christian fumble and drove deep into Eagles territory. But P.C. got a stop, then marched 80 yards in just 87 seconds, capped with Kacmarynski’s 33-yard dart to Trevor Veenstra.

The Eagles got another stop and had one last chance, driving into Sigourney-Keota territory before Kacmarynski was tackled for a three yard loss on third and one, and a swing pass to Benny Schirz on fourth and four was snuffed out for no gain. Three kneel downs later and the Cobras claimed victory.

Sigourney-Keota ran the ball on 64 of their 66 offense snaps, gaining 243 yards. Kacmarynski led Pella Christian with 13 carries for 130 yards and he was 11-of-18 passing for 86 yards.

The Eagles fall to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in district play and they’ll host Pleasantville next Friday night.
