The #7 Simpson College women’s basketball team are American Rivers Conference champions after taking down Coe College in overtime Saturday evening 89-84, winning their first conference championship since 2013 in a game heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Storm and Kohawks went back and forth in a foul-ridden defensive battle throughout the first half, with Coe earning a 16-13 first quarter advantage but the Storm played a strong second quarter to take a 35-30 halftime lead.

The third quarter was all Coe however, outscoring the Storm 29-19 and having all the momentum at the end of the third to take a 59-54 lead going into the final 10 minutes. The game of runs could not have been more evident in the fourth, as the Storm went on a 17-0 run to begin the frame to earn a 71-59 lead with just six minutes remaining, but Coe would go on a 20-6 run including a pair of three-point buckets with less than a minute to go to take a two-point lead with just 2.5 seconds remaining. Senior Cameron Kincaid was fouled on the way to the hoop with .5 seconds remaining, and sunk both free throws to force the extra period.

In the extra time, the Storm got ahead by five points early in the overtime period, but had to survive yet another Coe comeback attempt, but held strong on the defensive end.

Seniors Jenna Taylor and Cameron Kincaid said after the game after all the work put in to get to this point was all worth it when they got to cut down the nets as conference champions.

“I’ve probably pictured that moment in my head maybe a hundred times over the last four years so it coming to fruition was unbelievable.”

“I’m speechless. It was an experience coach would talk about and we knew we wanted that. We put in the work and it’s amazing to see it come true.”

The Storm’s season comes to a close with a perfect 12-0 record.
