The National Weather Service in Des Moines has released the first of two spring flood outlooks for the upcoming season.

Senior Hydrologist Jeff Zogg says flooding of area rivers and streams is more likely due to a combination of factors, including the heavier-than-average snowfall this winter, current snowpack that remains on the ground, and above average soil moisture along most major river basins. He says the long-term forecast from the National Climate Center puts equal chances of above or below average precipitation this coming season, and if it’s a wet spring, widespread flooding is likely at times.

An update to the outlook will be released on March 7th. Hear more about this spring’s flood outlook on today’s Let’s Talk Pella.
