Volksweg Trail In Need of Funding

A new section of the Volksweg Trail is cleared and now the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is waiting on funding. Lake Red Rock Assistant Operations Manager John Holt says they went forward with clearing a path for the extension of the trail in anticipation of possible stimulus funding, which unfortunately didnt materialize. The 13-mile Volksweg Trail has been constructed piecemeal over the years per availability of federal funds. Holt says this is a project they like to keep shovel ready.

AmeriCorps Receiving Federal Stimulus Money for Expansion

The 2009 federal stimulus package expanded the ranks of the AmeriCorps program and this is having local ramifications. Kelly Dooley is a VISTA with AmeriCorps and works at Central College. Dooley says VISTA is a branch of AmeriCorps dedicated to combating poverty. Through the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Dooley says additional positions are being created in Iowa
