After 12 hours of debate, the Iowa House of Representatives voted to approve House File 516–also known as the Voter Identification Bill.

The legislation, if enacted by the Republican led Senate and signed by Governor Terry Branstad, would require all Iowans to show some sort of identification on Election Day. The bill outlines five forms of ID that would be valid on election day, with four of them requiring a photo. State Representative Greg Heartsill tells KNIA/KRLS News the fifth form of ID that would be valid would be a new voter verification card the state and county would issue to every voter free of charge. According to the bill, anyone who shows up to the polls without valid ID could vote using a provisional ballot.
