The Pella Christian boys hung tough but it was too little too late as they fell at undefeated Des Moines Christian, the top ranked team in Class 2A 65-55 last night. The Eagles dug themselves a hole early with twelve turnovers in the first quarter and allowed ten transition baskets in the first half to fall behind 41-24 at halftime. The Eagles battled back in the second half outscoring Des Moines Christian 31-24 but the Lions were able to hold them off for the win. Coach Larry Hessing said he was pleased with how they played the second half as they settled down and were able to pound the ball inside and run their offense but was disappointed with their transition defense especially in the first half. Kyle Nikkel led the Eagles with 14 points and 12 rebounds, Chase Carlson contributed 12 points and Alex Branderhorst added 10. The Eagles dropped to 14-5 on the season and will have another tough task tomorrow afternoon hosting Norwalk who as of today is undefeated and top ranked in Class 3A. You can hear Saturday’s varsity boys game with Jamie Brockman on 92.1 FM KRLS and kniakrls.com starting around 3:30pm. From there the Eagles head to the post season where they will host Pleasantville Monday night.
