After opening Iowa Conference play with a solid 7-1 win over Wartburg College, the Central College baseball team was stymied Saturday afternoon by two six-run victories by the Knights. Wartburg won the first game 6-0, then claimed the second game with a score of 9-3. Both wins for Wartburg featured pitchers that controlled the game for all seven innings, and also included key offensive innings that gave the Knights control of the game.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Central held steady with Wartburg, until a four-run sixth inning broke the game open for good, while the Dutch were limited to just two hits by Wartburg’s Brad Watson. In the second game, the Knights roughed up Central’s Ryan Goetzinger for five runs in the first inning, and the Dutch were never able to recover.

With the losses, Central is now 10-6 overall this season and 1-2 in the Iowa Conference. The Dutch baseball team travels to Dubuque next, for a three-game series with the Spartans, which starts on Friday.
