1983 Knoxville Nationals champion Slammin Sammy Swindell continued his hot streak at Knoxville this year, leading all 25 laps of the A Main winning night two of the 50th annual Good Year Knoxville Nationals.

The feature was filled with excitement and certainly didn’t lack drama as it took three attempts to get a clean start, but once they did the Sammy show was on. Swindell started third and didn’t waste any time passing the front row through turns one and two. It appeared he would drive away from the field, however four time defending champion Donny Schatz worked his way to second and eventually raced side by side with Sammy for the lead on lap 10, however lapped traffic got in the mix and Swindell was able to pull away. Schatz challenged again on the white flag lap, but Mike Moore spun in turn three bringing out a caution which would lead to a green white checker finish attempt and one final chance for Schatz to make a pass. On the restart Moore spun again in turn three which then set up a one lap shootout. While under caution Schatz noticeably had a right rear going down, but elected to stay out and on the restart slipped back and settled for a fifth place finish. Knoxville regulars Brian Brown and Skip Jackson earned podium finishes in second and third respectively with Stevie Smith fourth and Schatz completing the top five. [simage=3607,200,y,right]

Other big news from night two saw four time champion Danny Lasoski as well as Tim Kaeding both have motor issues in their heats which placed them in the C main. Lasoski won and Kaeding was second earning both drivers a spot at the tail of the B Main. Lasoski’s struggles continued as he could only muster a 12th place finish while Kaeding charged all the way to sixth but neither driver would transfer to the A main.

After the two qualifying nights Knoxville’s own Brian Brown is the top point gainer with 484 putting him in great position to win his first ever Nationals crown, Swindell is second followed by Greg Hodnett, Schatz and Steve Kinser completes the top five with Daryn Pittman, Tim Shaffer, Shane Stewart, Jason Johnson and Dale Blaney rounding out the top 10.

Tonight will be the non qualifiers races for drivers who are 51st on back in points and the winner of tonight’s A main will start 11th in tomorrow’s C feature. Other races include the pole scrambles which will feature the top 10 in points for the A, B and C features as well as the World Challenge Race to end the night. We’ll have live coverage on KNIA/KRLS and kniakrls.com starting with Live Trackside at 6pm and flag to flag coverage at 7:30pm.
