In other Central College athletics on Saturday, the Dutch won the title of its own volleyball tournament Saturday with a sweep of Rockford College. Pella junior Haley Brillhart had six kills and Chelsea Grieger again was outstanding at the libero position with eight digs. The Dutch also defeated Buena Vista and Illinois Wesleyan in tourney matches Friday night and finished with a 3-0 mark. Brillhart and senior Ashley Ellingston were each named to the All Tournament team. Central improved to 11-3 and returns to Iowa Conference action Tuesday at Cornell College in Mount Vernon with a 7:30 p.m. match.
The women’s golf team claimed its first tournament title of the fall at the seven-team Loras Invitational. Central shot a two day total of 731 to win easily by 59 strokes. Former Knoxville standout, sophomore Kaurie Kincaid took medalist honors with a 179 as the Dutch dominated the leaderboard. The stretch run of the fall season starts Friday and Saturday with the first two rounds of the 72-hole Iowa Conference tournament at the par-72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls. The tourney concludes Oct. 8-9 at Centennial Oaks Golf Course in Waverly.
Jason Harvey overcame the elements and carded an even-par 72 in a steady opening round for the Central College men’s golf team at the mammoth 32-team University of Dubuque Bishop’s Buffet Tournament Saturday. Central turned in a 303 while the Dutch second unit, the White squad, posted a 313. Because of the large field and soggy conditions, a few groups did not finish their rounds and complete team standings were not yet available. The 36-hole tourney will be completed Sunday, with second-round action beginning at 9 a.m.
Sophomore Chelsea Johnson picked up two wins at number six singles but the Central College women’s tennis team lost 8-1 to Augustana and 5-4 to North Central in Rock Island, Ill., Saturday. Central plays on the road next week, traveling to Lamoni to face Graceland Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. before taking on Wartburg Friday and Luther Saturday.
Sophomores Sierra Kuhns and Liz Clancy each scored a goal in the first half to lead the Central College women’s soccer team to their first victory of the season, a 2-1 victory in the Iowa Conference opener against Buena Vista Saturday.
