Did you know that if you plan ahead, Christmas trees that are enjoyed indoors around the holidays could possibly be replanted? Marion County Extension Office Program Director Dale Miller says it will take planning, special care and cooperation from Mother Nature in order to be successful, but it is possible.

First, Miller says it’s important to choose a recommended tree species for Iowa such as a white pine or red cedar.

He says live trees will only last indoors for around a week and it’s important to keep the roots moist at all times.

Also, Miller recommends digging the hole now before the ground freezes even more. Holes should be twice the diameter of the root ball but no deeper than the ball due. He says the roots should not be too deep especially in our poor draining clay soils.

In addition, Miller recommends adding insulation such as a 10 inch layer of straw over the hole and extra soil to prevent it from freezing.
