On Saturday, 5 Central College players took part in the Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of Stars). They were Jordan Leuschen (Decorah), Austin Hill (senior, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic HS), Shane Wong (senior, Pleasant Hill, Southeast Polk HS), Lee Schroeder (senior, Malcom, Montezuma HS) and wide receiver/punter Kurtis Brondyke (senior, Clinton).
Team Stars and Stripes squared off against the Mexican CONADEIP allstars. Before the contest, coach Bill Manlove chose Central defensive tackle Austin Hill to be the Team Stars and Stripes defensive captain.
During the game, Central senior tight end Jordan Leuschen had 4 receptions for 58 yards including a 4-yard TD pass, defensive end Shane Wong had 4 tackles and one sack, Austin Hill had two tackles for loss including a sack.
By the end the game, The Division III team (Stars and Stripes) had a 475-158 edge in total offense, 370 of which came through the air. The Mexican squard was held to just 152 passing yards. Team Stars and Stripes got the win, 48-7.
Central’s John Roslien was the team’s athletic trainer, and Dutch assistant coach Don de Waard was the defensive coordinator. Stars and Stripes quarterback Jake Caron of Pomona-Pitzer (California) was named MVP, compiling 139 yards along with 3 touchdowns on 13-20 passing.
