Earlier this month the Knoxville City Council was approached with a request to seek bids for purchase of a tanning bed for the Recreation Center, at that time the matter was tabled and now the recommendation has been reversed. City Manager Dick Schrad says he has advised the Council that they are recommending not pursuing the issue. Schrad says he has done additional research and has discussed the matter with Recreation Director Brandon Nemmers, who brought the initial proposal forward after several members requested tanning services. Schrad says when he learned that the World Health Organization classifies tanning beds as carcinogenic; they concluded that tanning beds may not be an appropriate part of the wellness mission they espouse at the Recreation Center. He says he does not expect the request to move forward at all.
