A sweltering heat wave is making its way through south central Iowa, with temperatures reaching the upper 90s and heat indices in Knoxville making their way up to 124 on Thursday. The National Weather Service says that temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s today, with heat indexes in the upper 100s and low 110s. A heat advisory will remain in effect until 7pm on Friday. Judi Van Hulzen with Marion County Public Health reminds people to remember the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Some of the symptoms are heavy sweating, dizziness, muscle cramps, a rapid pulse, nausea, vomiting, and others. She also says to check up on your neighbors to make sure they’re ok. Older people are more likely to be taking medications that cause dehydration, such as some laxatives and some blood pressure control medicine. The most important thing is to remember to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.
