January is National Eye care month. Local optometrist Dr. Kevin Jones with Family EyeCare Center in Pella says that getting your child screened for vision problems before it hinders their educational process is important. He tells KNIA/KRLS that Family Eye Care encourages eye exams to infants between 0 and 1 years old so that problems with vision can be detected before they become a problem.

Dr. Jason Maasdam, with Eye Health Solutions in Knoxville, says that getting your children in for those annual appointments is especially important because, many times, they don’t know enough to tell that their vision isn’t good. Symptoms can be hard to tell, but sometimes include squinting and headaches. Maasdam says that your child’s teacher is usually the first person that can tell something may be off. If issues about your child’s eyesight are brought to your attention from a teacher, you should have it checked out as soon as you can.
