A lay-up by Kelsey Townsend with 5 seconds left in regulation capped off an impressive comeback by the PCM girls basketball team, as they toppled Pella 52-50 Saturday night in Monroe in a game heard live on KRLS.
The Mustangs trailed the Lady Dutch 18-6 after one quarter of play, but steadily chipped away at the deficit over the next quarter-and-a-half; taking their first lead with 3:34 remaining in the third quarter. From there the two teams battled back and forth – and it appeared the game was destined for overtime – before Townsend was able to slip past the defense for the game-winning score.
While Townsend’s 11 points were key in the victory for PCM, it was teammate Courtney VanHouweling whose brilliant play put the Mustangs in a position to win. VanHouweling led all scorers with 22 points, while also pulling down a team-best 7 rebounds. Pella High wasn’t without their own impressive performance, as Madeline Meyer scored a team-best 14 points, and Regan Cooper tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The loss drops the Pella girls to 6-4 overall, while PCM improves to 11-7 on the season.
