Senator Chuck Grassley says that the new Farm Bill has passed in committee with bipartisan support. Grassley spoke with KNIA/KRLS on Monday about some of its provisions. He says that the new bill would save $23 billion by making some cuts on food stamps as well as setting a hard cap on payments. Grassley says that the hard cap will be $50,000. He adds that the cap is in place to help spread out payments for small farmers, noting that currently 10% farmers receive 70% of farm payments.
Grassley explains that debate has started on the Senate floor, and he hopes it’ll be passed in both chambers by the end of next week. The greatest opposition to the bill is expected to come from southern legislators, who feel the bill was unfair to cotton, peanut, and rice farmers.
