With Election Day less than two months away, more and more political signs are beginning to pop up around Marion County. In Knoxville and Pella, signs are not allowed in the right-of-way. That’s the area between the curb and sidewalk or where the sidewalk would typically be on a yard without one. Signs should not be an impediment for motorists or pedestrians, and they are not allowed to be larger than 32 square feet in Knoxville. In the county, officials remind property owners than signs are not allowed in the right-of-way either. Generally speaking, the right-of-way border in the county can be determined by field fences and power poles.
There are no regulations on when signs can be put up. A recent Iowa Supreme Court decision overturned municipal codes restricting timelines of when signs can go up, saying it broke first amendment rights.
