U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley says that he wants a five-year Farm Bill done as the deadline for this current bill is set to expire at the end of the month. If nothing is done by October 1, legislation from a 1949 Farm Bill will kick in, which Grassley says isn’t useful to 21st Century agriculture. A bill is currently in debate in the House and is being held up by a food stamps debate. That bill calls for a 2% reduction in food stamp spending. Grassley says it sounds like some House Republicans don’t think that’s enough, and some House Democrats think it’s too much. That’s making a bipartisan compromise difficult. If a five-year agreement isn’t done, Grassley hopes to at least get an extension of the current bill through. He hopes for a year-long extension, though it may be six months or even three months. Senator Grassley does not expect the bill to expire without action.
