U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley says that he wants a five-year Farm Bill done as the deadline for this current bill is set to expire at the end of the month. If nothing is done by October 1, legislation from the 1949 Farm Bill will kick in, which Grassley says isn’t useful to 21st Century agriculture. A bill is currently in debate in the House and is being held up by a food stamps debate. That bill calls for a 2% reduction in food stamp spending. Grassley says it sounds like some House Republicans don’t think that’s enough, and some House Democrats think it’s too much. That’s making a bipartisan compromise difficult. If a five-year agreement isn’t done, Grassley hopes to at least get an extension of the current bill through. He hopes for a year-long extension, though it may be six months or even three months. Senator Grassley does not expect the bill to expire without action.
