At the Pella City Council meeting on Tuesday night new compensation rates were set for the Pella Fire Department. City Administrator Mike Nardini says that with new regulation for ongoing training for firefighters mandated by the state, the city felt it was necessary to increase the compensation. The city’s volunteer firefighters must complete 24 hours of training each year. The council increased the rate of compensation for the firefighters from around $15,000 per year, to an estimate cost of $33,000. Nardini says its not just because of the required training, its also to make sure the city can attract volunteer firefighters in the future.
