The Little and Lady Dutch got back to the winning side of things last night in their games against Carlisle. The Pella girls jumped out to a 42 – 18 lead at the half and never looked back in a 67 – 30 taming of the Wildcats. Nine different players scored for the Lady Dutch, led by Jessica Holterhaus’ 22 points on 11-of-12 shooting. Pella also limited their turnovers, only giving the ball away seven times in each half. On the boys’ side, Pella rode an early 11-point lead to a narrow three point victory over Carlisle, 64 – 61. The Little Dutch were up 23 – 12, and seemed to be heading down the same path as their Lady Dutch counterparts, but the Wildcats’ boys kept sticking around and getting easy buckets, turning a 15 point deficit into a one-point game with less than a minute left, until Jordan Pingel answered with a big lay-up to put the Dutch up by three with eight seconds left. The biggest play of the game may have been the defensive stop on the ensuing possession, as Carlisle’s hottest shooter, Jared Veith, had a chance to tie in the waning moments. Josh DeWaard’s partial block of Veith’s desperation three helped secure the win for the now 5 – 1 Little Dutch, who will next play at home on Friday to close out 2012 against rival Grinnell.
