Central’s basketball teams went 1 – 1 Wednesday night against Dubuque. The Dutch women fell just a little short, losing 77 – 71 to the Spartans. Central had no answer to Mollie Whiting, who scored 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Meggie Schmidt also threw in 24 points off the bench for Dubuque. Four players were in double figures for the Dutch, three of them coming off the bench, as Courtney Kelderman led with 15 points, Annie Sarcone had 12, and Kenzie Vander Molen added 11. Alyssa Schwartz also threw in 14 points. Over on the men’s side, the Dutch erased the donut from the win column of their conference record to beat the Spartans 61 – 58. Eight of the nine players who saw playing time for Central ended up in the scoring column, led by Yow who had 12 points off the bench. Central trailed by seven with 3:44 to play, but held Dubuque off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game and closed the contest on a 10 – 0 run. Both Central squads are 1 – 3 in Iowa Conference play, and will head to Dubuque to play Loras next on Saturday.
