Corn and Bean prices are steady according to Justin Hibner of Two Rivers Co-op in Pella. Hibner adds that local crops look good, but the USDA report that was just released was a head scratcher. The corn yield was expected to be 158 to 160 bushels per acre nationwide, while the USDA released 154 for their approximation. Traders are skeptical since the USDA used a five year average. Soybeans were also a surprise. Average trade estimates were at 43.5 bushels per acre, while the USDA’s number was released at 42.6. Hibner says the beans number is a little more believable because of a late start to the planting season, with less rain than expected.
