Iowa’s deer harvest has dropped below 100,000 for the first time since the mid 1990’s. Hunters reported 99,406 deer for the 2013 season, which is a 14% decline from 2012, and 34% decrease from its high in 2006. Marion County Conservation Officer Ken Kenyon says that it’s a good thing the numbers are declining. He adds that there needs to be balance, and the number of licenses available for sale depends on the deer population, number of deer hits, and other factors that help determine the appropriate number of licenses to get the results they are looking for. Deer hunters purchased 359,956 licenses, and create an economic impact of nearly $214 million.
