Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholt says that from March 14th through March 17th, Iowa law enforcement will be out in force looking for traffic violators as part of the special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP). This enforcement event is one component in a statewide project to help change driver behavior and encourage motorists to obey traffic laws with an emphasis on buckling up, slowing down and driving sober.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to have a safe and responsible St. Patrick’s Day by…

* Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
* Before drinking, please designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home.
* If you know someone who is about to drive impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get where they are going safely.
* If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact your local law enforcement or call 911 to report them.

By following these easy steps, drivers can enjoy a safe and festive holiday without jeopardizing their lives and the lives of others who may be on the roads this St. Patrick’s Day. Sheriff Sandholdt states, “We encourage people to be responsible while celebrating on St. Patrick’s Day. We want people to have a good time however we want them to think about their actions and the consequences of one poor decision. Let’s make it a happy event for everyone!”
