Fifty-eight yards. Zero points. These were the statistics put up by Cedar Rapids Xavier and by the Pella High defense, as the Little Dutch defeated the Saints in last night’s Class 3A State Semifinal game, 27 – 0, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The Little Dutch started with the ball and turned it over on downs, but the defense would record the first of a handful of three-and-outs to get the ball back to the offense. Pella was able to drive deep into Xavier territory, thanks to a long pass play to Will Warner. Nathan Henry took the next play 15 yards up the middle for Pella’s first score, and that’s all they would need thanks to a dominant defensive effort. Coach Jay McKinstrey says a big key to the win was their victory in the battle up front. Noah Clayberg rushed for 129 yards to lead the team, Henry had 66 total, and Pella gained 339 yards of total offense. The Little Dutch improve to 13 – 0 on the season and must take down Sioux City Heelan in the Class 3A finals next Thursday night at 7:06 p.m., in a game that will be live on 92.1 KRLS.
