Knoxville Hospital & Clinics Dietitian Hannah Ostrander says the amount of people who have diabetes is on the rise in the United States.

Ostrander says 29.1 million Americans reportedly had diabetes in 2012 or 9.3 percent of the country’s population. That’s a full percentage point higher than the 8.3 percent that had it back in 2010.

Ostrander adds there’s also a high prevalence of pre-diabetes in the country. She says it’s a good idea to see your primary care physician to get yourself checked for diabetes regularly.
