This week is National Poison Prevention Week.
More than two million poisonings are reported each year to the nation’s 57 poison centers, and more than 90 percent of those occur in the home. While the majority of nonfatal poisonings occur in children younger than six years old, it is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury in adults. Director of the Pella Regional Emergency Department Carla Chow says in the case of an accidental poisoning, call the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 1 (800) 222-1222. She says if the hotline advises you to come to the emergency department, Pella Regional’s staff will also get a phone call in order to be prepared for your arrival.
