4-H participants have been affected by the recent announcement that live bird exhibitions at the Iowa State Fair, county fairs, and other gatherings of birds have been cancelled due to the outbreak of avian influenza across the state.
Marion County Extension Program Director Dale Miller tells KNIA/KRLS News approximately 54 kids with close to 200 birds have been impacted by this decision.
On Thursday, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced the ban effective immediately. They say Iowa has over 25 million birds and more than 60 farms impacted by the bird flu.
Miller says extension offices across the state are working to come up with ideas to allow those kids impacted by the bird ban to participate in county fairs and the Iowa State Fair.
