By the time they were done having fun, a dozen different players scored in Pella High’s 79 – 23 romp of Saydel in last night’s opening round of the Class 3A district boys’ basketball tourney. The Little Dutch got out to a 29 – 4 lead after one quarter, led by Ryan Van Wyk’s ten points. He went on to score a game-high 15, while Donovan Holterhaus added 12, and Will Warner and Jackson Scholten each scored ten. All 14 players on Pella’s roster played at some point in the first half. Coach Mark Core wanted his team to get off on the right foot, and says they did exactly that. The win improves Pella’s record to 20 – 1 on the season, and advances them to the district final in Norwalk on Thursday. They’ll play Bondurant-Farrar, a team that gave them some troubles back in December, but whom the Little Dutch ultimately handled, 57 – 45. The winner will play at Johnston in the substate game next Monday.
