Coffee Cup Cafe June 2016

The Pella City Council intends to bring legal action against the owners of the Coffee Cup Cafe if the damaged building isn’t demolished by Monday.

A formal motion was voted on following a lengthy closed session discussing the matter at Tuesday’s meeting. According to the council, a 90-day notice was given to the owners of the building consumed in an October 2015 fire, and that expires today. They cited safety concerns as the primary reason behind the letter and the order to demolish the remains.

Pella Fire and Ambulance crews were called to Coffee Cup Cafe just before 10 p.m. on October 26th, as witnesses saw flames shooting from the top of the building. A large portion of the structure was destroyed by the blaze, and has remained vacant ever since.

Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky confirms an investigation with the State Fire Marshall’s office into the cause is still ongoing, citing the “tedious” nature of fire investigations. Bokinsky says a lot of forensic testing is required in fires, due to much of the physical evidence burning up.

He does say the structure is no longer required, as investigators say the necessary evidence has already been collected.
