The Knoxville School District is considering proactive steps to assist dyslexic learners.
At the latest school board meeting elementary reading teacher Jennifer Lambirth presented strategies for building reading comprehension for students who struggle to grasp it due to the disability. Lambirth has utilized multimedia strategies to make gains with dyslexic learners in the district, but says the problem is more prevalent than many realize. She says 10%- 15% of the student body may be on the spectrum of dyslexia. Knoxville Superintendent Cassi Pearson says a literacy study group has been formed in order to overcome obstacles to reading well. The group is developing strategies to help readers improve. She says Knoxville is committed to giving all students the opportunity to succeed.
