The Marion County Roads Department is prepared for winter weather.
County Engineer Tyler Christian tells KNIA/KRLS News 3,200 tons of salt is in storage around the county and plowing equipment was checked and ready to work at the beginning of October. In an average winter the department spreads about 1,200 tons of salt mixed with sand on county roads. Christian says his crews will do their best to keep roads clear and safe, but drivers must also do their part. He says avoiding distracted driving and making sure you have extra time to reach your destination when roads are slick or snow-covered is the safest way to travel. A built-in budget for overtime hours ensures that roads will be cleared beginning at 4:00 a.m. every time overnight snow falls on roads this season.
