The investigation continues as to what caused 66-year-old Dennis Mockenhaupt of Knoxville to crash his Ford truck through the front of the Pella Walmart, which killed three people and injured another on December 1st.

District 40 State Senator Ken Rozenboom tells KNIA/KRLS News he was able to visit the store and meet with numerous individuals following the tragedy, and offers condolences to all who were impacted.

In response to questions about potential legislation to protect shoppers and employees at storefronts, Senator Rozenboom feels actions taken by Walmart and local ordinances may be the best solution to consider stricter regulations on the store in Pella, but did not rule out any statewide legislative proposals to help prevent similar tragedies in Iowa. Rozenboom says he would explore the possibility of legislation this session and review any current regulations on the books.

Rob Reiter with the Storefront Safety Council says it could cost Walmart as little as $5000 to $10,000 to replace decorative concrete bollards currently in place with higher grade material and close some of the spacing gaps to make a safer storefront.
