Knoxville’s Coaches Versus Cancer has already ready received a total of $10,000 in cash donations ahead of tomorrow’s day of fundraising activities.

Angie Uitermarkt, co-organizer of the event with Coach Jim Uitermarkt tells KNIA/KRLS News she is surprised every year by the surge of generosity within the community. She cried with joy the first year when the campaign managed to raise $4,000 and each year has brought increasing amazement with the past years averaging around $80,000.

Two people affected by Cancer will be honored between tomorrow night’s boy’s and girl’s basketball games. Uitermarkt says their is a special connection between the honorees this year, as Barry Smith and his mother-in-law Sue Pelong have both seen the effects of cancer.

Angie says their relationship demonstrates just how pervasive cancer can be. She says it is unlikely that anyone who will be in gym Saturday night has not had their lives affected by the disease in some way.

The Coaches Versus Cancer presentation can be heard live on 95.3 FM and 1320 AM KNIA. The basketball broadcast for Knoxville vs. Pella Christian begins at 6:00 p.m. with the girls’ game.
