Ice on Lake Red Rock can be very treacherous according to Marion County DNR Officer Ken Kenyon.
Currents flowing beneath the ice sheet can make it unpredictable and dangerous. Kenyon says the way the lake is shaped allows the west wind to blow in and keep much of the ice thin throughout the winter and temperatures ranging above and below freezing often, as they have this year, can create a honeycombing effect that makes even stable-looking ice fragile. Kenyon advises anyone who chooses to go out ice fishing or otherwise ventures on the lake to use extreme caution.
