Sending a handful of competitors to the Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational Saturday, the Central College men’s track & field team had fast times in the 800 meters, mile and 5,000 meters.
Mark Fairley had a pair of personal bests in the mile run (4:18.02) and 800-meter run (1:57.99), winning the mile and finishing fourth in the 800. Meanwhile, Jon Specht and Kyle Pape finished fifth and eight, respectively in the 800 meters and Isaac Steffensmeier took sixth in the 5,000 meters.
No team scores were kept at that event.
Central athletes also competed at the Darren Young Classic in Grinnell, with the men finishing 9th out of 11 teams fielding a partial squad, and the women taking fifth.
Justin Wimbish racked up a second-place finish in the long jump (21 feet, 11.75 inches) and 200-meter dash (22.73 seconds). He also was the third leg in the 4×400-meter relay team that scored seventh (3:32.26).
For Lorell Stuht of the Central women, she was returning to the site of her All-American performance a year ago, and she turned in a season-best performance in the weight throw. Stuht’s toss of 55 feet, 9.75 inches was more than enough to take the top spot, besting the field by over six feet.
A pair of competitions await the Dutch this weekend as they host the Central Invitational Friday night and a select group will take part in the Iowa Open on Saturday.
